The Sarah Palin Defense Strategy: George Zimmerman’s lawyer is using social media like a pro.

George Zimmerman, charged with second-degree murder for the killing of Trayvon Martin, is shutting down his old social media accounts. (Not helpful: The 2005 MySpace page where he wrote “I dont miss driving around scared to hit mexicans walkin on the side of the street, soft ass wanna be thugs messin with peoples cars.”) Zimmerman isn’t going dark online, however. Instead, his defense lawyer, Mark O’Mara, started up a new Web page for his client this week, with Facebook and Twitter accounts to go with it. O’Mara noticed that Zimmerman had raised $204,000 from a website he started in April,...

Social Networks & The Online Jihad

SNIPPET: "In July, the British government warned that Al Qaeda’s exploitation of social networking websites is on the rise." SNIPPET: "The massive and multifarious network of websites and social media has presented a challenge to authorities in trying to combat it. Additionally, civil liberty concerns have conflicted with government efforts to spy on communications. Reducing terrorist activity on social media sites has been particularly difficult because users have adopted new forms of communication to conform with the new formats. Many Arabic speakers on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and other sites use Arabizi, a form of colloquial Arabic written in the Latin...

Social Media Overload: Help!

Facebook, Twitter, and other social media networks have been dominating the news lately: President Obama launched his reelection campaign with an underwhelming Facebook app, we read a chilling report about "Facebook Depression," and multiple stories have tracked what Charlie Sheen or Miley Cyrus (who's back on Twitter!) is tweeting about. But isn't Facebook and Twitter always in the news these days? The media's love affair with social media knows no bounds--and it's out of control, if you ask me. It feels as though our social media obsession has reached some kind of tipping point. Am I alone in my disapprobation...

The U.S. District Court indictment, unsealed on Monday, alleges that several former rival factions of the gang worked together to recruit new prostitutes by targeting underage girls from broken homes. Writing letters from prison as well as establishing contact using MySpace, Twitter and Facebook, the gang members gained control over the girls and then advertised them using Craigslist and Backpage.com,...

2011: The Year Social Media Collapsed? (Vanity)

I have heard a couple pundits recently state that they believe Social Media—FaceBook, Twitter, MySpace—will see a huge exodus in the very near future. I too believe there will be an exodus, but in smaller proportions than "mass." My recent experience with Social Media shows a marked increase in spam, businesses and advertising. Seems like everyone on Twitter these days are trying to sell something. So, what do you think the future holds for Social Media?

Burglar Leaves Home's Computer Logged Into MySpace

Monroe County teen left identity on screen and pot on a tableThere are dumb criminals everywhere, but it certainly seems like South Florida has a pretty large cache: a burglary suspect in Big Coppitt Key was identified after leaving a home's computer logged into his MySpace account. Here's guessing 18-year-old Robert Rupp's friend count shortly dwindled. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says the caretaker of the home on Point Drive was opening hurricane shutters Sunday afternoon when he glanced through a window and saw someone sitting on a couch in the living room. The suspect was gone when deputies arrived,...

Stephen Breyer backtracks, now says Koran Burning may be Constitutional

Appearing on CNN, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer told Larry King that burning the Koran was protected speech. When asked if Pastor Jones of Florida had a right to burn the book, Breyer said, "Yeah, I said it depends on what analogy you use, but the most one analogous case is that there was — you have the right to burn an American flag as a symbol." Earlier, Breyer told George Stephanopoulos that burning the Koran may not be protected by the First Amendment and compared it to yelling 'fire' in a crowded theater.

Did Whites Flee the 'Digital Ghetto' of MySpace?

(Danah) Boyd's current work argues that MySpace took on many of the aspects of a "digital ghetto" in the minds of teens who used the site, leading to "white [and asian] flight" from the site, analogous to the white flight from the city to the suburbs that took place in the U.S. beginning in the 1960's. Boyd continues: Consider the parallels. In some senses, the first teens to move to the "suburbs" were those who bought into a Teen Dream of collegiate maturity, namely those who were expressly headed towards dorm-based universities and colleges. They were the elite who were...
