Christopher Toner: What's at Stake in the Wisconsin Recall Election

Wisconsin's recall election is on, pitting Gov. Scott Walker against Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. If Mr. Walker is voted out of office on June 5, what other politician will be willing to step forward to address America's entitlement challenges? Mr. Walker's record is well known: He limited collective bargaining for government labor unions and trimmed health-insurance and pension benefits, bringing them more in line with private business. Organized labor thinks Mr. Walker's reforms should be the end of his career. They argue, first, that public workers just wanted to "have a voice" in their employment. But public-school teachers are more...

Tom Barrett demands Scott Walker explain legal defense fund

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett demanded Tuesday, May 16, that Gov. Scott Walker disclose any advice state election officials gave him about forming a defense fund linked to a secret probe of his associates. The Republican governor hasn't been charged in the investigation but Democrats insist he created the fund because he's a key figure in the probe. Barrett, a Democrat who will face Walker in a June 5 recall election, has demanded for weeks that Walker reveal exactly what's going on.

In the Walker-Barrett do-over, how many will re-do their votes?

As divided as Wisconsin voters are along party lines, both sides think they can win some defections June 5. Republicans think some voters who opposed Scott Walker in 2010 won't vote against him now because they don't like recalls. Democrats think some people who voted for Scott Walker in 2010 won’t do so again because they have buyer's remorse.Do these two groups of potential “defectors” exist in any meaningful numbers? Could they decide the outcome in a close race?Think of June 5 as two elections. One is a do-over for people who voted in the 2010 Walker-Barrett contest, which Walker won by 124,638 votes...

Labor group's pro-Falk TV ads vanish

Public employee unions had everything lined up. Their nemesis, Gov. Scott Walker, was facing an unprecedented recall election. Their hand-picked candidate, former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk, came out of the blocks running. Their front group was set to spend millions to help push Falk over the top. So what went wrong? Wisconsin for Falk, a coalition of labor groups, has spent an estimated $3 million on statewide TV ads and multiple slick fliers touting Falk's candidacy - all without seeing her gain traction against the Democratic front-runner, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. The most recent public and private polls show...

Barrett and Falk debate electability against Scott Walker

When Gov. Scott Walker went up with an ad last week attacking Tom Barrett, he was looking to weaken a potential June opponent. But Barrett used it as a badge of honor, because it seemed to bolster one of his main arguments to Democratic voters in the May 8 primary -- that he’s the opponent Walker takes most seriously. “I think it’s a bit of a back-handed compliment from the Republicans,” said Barrett spokesman Phil Walzak, who said the Walker ad shows “they’re clearly more concerned about facing Tom Barrett in the general election than any other candidate.” Is Tom...

Scott Walker. But Barrett rebuffed the union bosses. According to an email obtained by No Quarter, Wisconsin Education Association Council President Mary Bell, WEAC Executive Director Dan Burkhalter and other top union officials had a face-to-face meeting with the Democratic mayor on Monday to discuss the potential Walker recall race. "Despite attempts to communicate the issues you laid out very clearly in our meeting on Saturday,...

Reprimand of Guantanamo Chief Urged, Nixed

WASHINGTON - A military investigation into FBI reports of prisoner abuse at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, recommended that the base's former commander be reprimanded, but a top general rejected the recommendation, according to a congressional aide familiar with the inquiry's findings. In the latest examination of a facility that has become a battleground over the U.S. treatment of detainees from the war against terrorism, the aide said investigators recommended that Army Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Miller be reprimanded for failing to oversee the interrogation of a high-value detainee, which was found to have been abusive. But Gen....
